TETRAGRAM FOR GATHERING explores contemporary art in the ‘post-internet’ era; an emerging cultural state in which the initial dreams of a networked society have been replaced by a more practical understanding of the systems strengths and failures.

Themes of nostalgia, intrigue and optimism are touched upon, with the contributing artists rejecting simplistic celebrations of technological process in favour of a multi-layered culturally and technically engaged vision, investigating aspects of pop culture, economic critique and the pursuit of esoteric and cryptic languages.

Camden Town Group Locations Revisited

The exterior locations favoured by the Camden Town painters in their commitment to rendering an urban modernity, the grime and occasional grandeur of the streets of North London, and the optimism of the newer garden suburbs, produced works dismissed by some contemporary critics as mawkish or sentimental, while lauded by others for offering a redemptive aesthetic of the city.

Joseph Waller’s photographs revisit four of the paintings from the exhibition. His treatment emulates the brilliant vibrating colour combinations favoured by the Camden Town Group to tell a story of contemporary London, still beautiful in spite of itself.

Our present age is defined by the shift from industrial production and physical labour to informational production; the two faced immateriality of globalisation. Thus as an artist responding to the circulation of commodities and transferrals, it is important that I take responsibility for this post-industrial, informational age by objectifying, if such a thing is possible with immaterial processes, the human experience mediated by transferrals of coding: transcoding. As Nicolas Bourriaud so eloquently states, “This passage from one code to another establishes, in contemporary art works, a novel vision of space-time that undermines the notions of origin and originality: digitization weakens the presence of the source, since every generation of an image is merely one moment in a chain without beginning or end.”
Natality and origins are of the utmost importance to a philosophical thinker who has been educated in the Arendtian style of the New School. In a sound collaboration and performance with Joseph Waller, entitled TextCursor, notions of cognitive birth and digital transferrals became the subject of the work. I performed the piece in December 2009 sitting in a dark room, with my laptop on my knees, speakers on either side of the chair and a camera filming opposite me. The transcript from the sound piece is as follows; I have not taken the time to format the text according to the recording’s rhythm or time frame; in the recording the text is delivered slowly with many pauses and breaks, sometimes caused by the background interference– digitized hiccups and so on, my voice is manipulated throughout the piece, becoming more and less digitized.

Name the first thing that comes into your mind. That was the first question I had for you. The question or rather should I say, request, digs directly into the core of our problem. So what is at stake you ask. Name. First. Thing. Mind. The Other. Origin. Object. Subject. My question answers itself with an object. Applicable only to our strange conditioned criteria. Criterion one: quantum decoherence. Criterion two: relational presence. Four axes can be drawn from one’s centre. Here at the centre, position yourself firmly in time and space. I feel you have allowed my voice to directly penetrate your thoughts. My thoughts. Your thoughts. Our thoughts. Our thoughts are identical. My voice is in your thoughts. Your voice is what I am thinking of. Your body can move freely but its form has already been contained in my thoughts. Your body in my thoughts. My body sensing your body in my thoughts. My body imitating your body. My thoughts are of you. And so you see I know you. Inside and out. Externally. Internally, mind. There is no separation. Your otherness is my prize. My noble thought. My awareness of you is essentially the same as your awareness of me. And so we are coherent. And so our communication is intelligible. That’s all for one, never ceasing to condition. Familiars of necessity not choice.

The text itself explores subjectivity, the subject addressing the Other; it toys with notions of coherence and communication between people irrespective of verbal expression. It is in essence a philosophical exercise, a subjective game to thwart Cartesian doubt, written indirectly for a young philosopher named Shyam Gohel, a man who insists he remain nameless. By collaborating with Joseph Waller, who recorded and manipulated my speech, the narrative of digitized subjectivity was introduced; the performance sound piece was a manifestation of the subjective experience obscured by layers of transferral through codes, translated into language and bits, transcoded until it became audible. The interference and digital manipulation of my voice reflects the subject in conflict with their virtual presence, while being necessitated by such condition. Digitization is contemporary man’s subjective global experience, online presence, virtual presence has replaced the necessity for physical presence, in the social, productive and intellectual realms. So no matter how much one attempts to position themselves firmly within time and space, contemporary life forbids the act, or at least obfuscates the boundaries of one’s ability to do so, one can now exist in any time and any space, multiply and divide their subjectivity at will. Presence is immaterial.
TextCursor draws parallels between language and code; both skeletal implements waiting to be configured to make subjective experiences or assertions understandable, both are removals from actual experience, though one is necessitated by time and the other exists exponentially, neither can be truly born. So, we find that TextCursor, as well as the latter three performances discussed are not only about manifold transferrals, but furthermore manifold removals, of the subject from other subjects, the subject from material, but most importantly of the subject from the self. Performance in general is a concentrated demonstration of subjective removal.
Heidegger states that if one examines the origin of an artwork, considering the triadic circulation of origins qua the artist, the work itself and the concept of art, inevitably “the question of the origin of the artwork becomes a question about the essence of art.” The essence of performative acts is what they produce and the process of producing those things: works and work. The products, the works, of a performance give the piece an objective, receivable ground, the things that can be judged or beheld by the viewer and transformed conceptually into art, be it spoken language in a text piece, the product of birth control, or the idea of alcohol poisoning signified by measurements of liquid in bottles. The process of the performance, the time-engaged movement of the performance that is necessitated by the presence of a body is the work of art and the physical work to make art. “Art is truth setting itself to work.” Performing, rather than object works (painting, sculpture and the like) embodies this notion of setting meaning and truth to work in time with the peculiar result of giving an end to it’s viewership and it’s life span as a work of art as work. “The work as work, in its essence, is a setting forth.” A setting forth of ideas, a removal from ordinary presence to a staging of ideas, an incubation and isolation of meaning; performing causes a work of art to be work in essence because it can only exist for the time that the work was being done, after the fact of it’s labour, once the body is removed, it’s remains become artifacts, documentation or purely meaningful memory. Thus the essence of the performance work is it’s lifetime as the work-being-made. Therefore, we find that performance has a far more tangible origin and end than other types of art in that they do not continue to exist in various contexts as a sculpture can be transported to various museums and gardens, yet again, one must always consider that this is simply in virtue of its formal designation, when in actuality all works of art are in essence transferrals, demonstrations of the human’s attempt to locate moments of meaning within various molecular, symbolic and material transferrals. This becomes more pronounced when one works through digitized means, as the material origins become immaterial, time becomes the only system of designation to the work, the only system of measurement to conceptually determine an origin or an end, all other components of the performance are essentially transferrals.

Queen Anne’s Lace (Daucus Carota) seeds impair the female subject’s progesterone synthesis in the uterus when eaten, making it difficult for an egg to implant successfully. A teaspoon of the seeds can be eaten whole and chewed thoroughly or crushed prior to ingestion immediately after sex or taken habitually during ovulation.

Sandeep Bhuller’s performance is a manifestation of the historical repression of birth control– a private ritual, an act of self-assertion, aggrandized and made public. For the duration of the performance Sandeep will manufacture pills of crushed Queen Anne’s Lace seeds. Sandeep trusts nature, once removed, to quell her own nature, behind a character who represents the historical female, taking steps through labor and production to assert her gender autonomy. Sandeep employs aestheticized labor and production to represent the transformation of the body from reproductive organism to chemically controlled vessel.
